1000 Cellphones was an installation featured in the Synthetic Times new media exhibit at the National Art Museum of China during the summer of 2008. A project in two parts on four flat-screens, 1000 Cellphones had both “push” and “pull” components. As visitors to the museum walked into the vicinity of the screens, custom bluejacking and bluetracking software searched out all bluetooth devices and “pulled” both the name of the device and MAC address ID signifiers into a database. This data was then used in a visualization built using Actionscript 3.0. At the same moment when the visitor would realize that their device’s name was featured on the screens above them for all to see, they would then receive an image on their phone which was “pushed” using the bluetooth connection. The image was chosen at random from a selection of over 1000 images representing the United States. Check out the video about the project below.
